Created in 2006 under the impetus of King Mohammed VI, the SIAM has quickly become an important meeting point in the agricultural sector.
The agricultural sector accounts for approximately 14 per cent of Morocco's GDP (2016). Thus, Morocco wanted to equip itself with an event bringing together all the country's agricultural expertise in order to boost the agricultural sector by encouraging partnerships and investments.
The SIAM also aims to promote the Green Morocco Plan, launched in 2008, which is a total restructuring of the agricultural sector. This involves the modernisation and rationalisation of agriculture in order to derive high added value and make it a driver of Moroccan agriculture. The SIAM has therefore become a showcase for this programme, as its exponential development (555,000 visitors in 2006, 1 million in 2016) has taken place in parallel with significant state investment in the agricultural sector. The SIAM is financed and sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests, and by the Crédit Agricole du Maroc.
Thus, among the exhibitors, one can find traditional local produce, cooperatives and associations, large Moroccan agri-food companies, manufacturers of agricultural machinery, livestock farmers and their animals, or even the main banks and state representatives to financially support agricultural projects.
The SIAM has also become, in a few years, a true international HUB. Indeed, its international section hosted representatives from 66 countries around the world in 2017. Thus, it has become an unmissable event in the African agricultural sector and welcomes distinguished guests and major players in global agriculture every year, such as the FAO, the European Union, the African Union, and various international institutions working in agriculture.
